TELL ME WHAT’S ON YOUR MIND

INTRO
This is a short story about two people who fell for each other blindly.
This is Rhoda and Daniel. It was through Daniel’s cousin who went to high school with Rhoda.
Daniels cousin was Estella
Whenever she came back home for holidays, would bring with her albums full of her friends’ pictures. Eventually Daniel fell for one of her cousin’s friends called Rhoda.
In their final year at high school, Daniel was sending a success card to his cousin then he thought of sending a bunch of them to even her close friends.
In Rhoda’s, he included a message saying, “hey Rhoda, aamm my cousin always talks about you. Don’t worry she didn’t say any thing bad, its all about how nice you are and I would like to have the honor of meeting you, but under one condition ‘if you like it too”
Rhoda responded by sending him one saying, “Daniel thanks for the bunch of cards you sent us, I was personally touched and I can’t wait to see you coz I also heard a lot about you.”
After their finals Daniel made several attempts to meet Rhoda but because of some reasons like Rhoda’s parents being strict it was hard for Rhoda to go out.
It was until they joined university that at least they could see each other but it was still hard.
At last when Daniel had given up, as he was at work .at that moment he was bored because he didn’t have customers.
Un expectedly he received a call from Rhoda, it was a flash, he called back.
-Phone ringing-
-She picked-
Rhoda; hello Dan
Daniel; hello, how are you
Rhoda; am fine
Daniel; I saw your missed call, that’s why I decided to call you back.
So what’s up?
Rhoda; amm! I wanted to ask you what you are doing this evening, may be we can hang out.
-Daniel is quiet
Rhoda; hello, Daniel are you there
Daniel; yes i am. I was just thinking
Rhoda; thinking about what?.
Daniel; it’s a good idea.
-He responded-
But what made you come up with this?
Rhoda; you know I had promised to see you so many times but I didn’t, so I want to make it up to you.
Daniel; ohh really!
Rhoda; yeah. Am for real.
Daniel; ok what’s the plan? I will be done with work at around 9pm. So where do I find you?
Rhoda; when you are done at work call me and we decide.
Daniel; fine I will do that.
Rhoda; have a nice day and thanks for calling.
Daniel; you too my dear.
-She hangs up-
Daniel is now thinking,” he was shabby he didn’t have any money on him because on that day didn’t have any plans to go out. All that was on his mind was to go back home and sleep after work.”
He thought of his good friend who could help him out.
This friend was called jimmy.

Daniel worked as he is asking himself when the day was going to end.
Finally the day ended and he called Rhoda
-Her phone rings twice-
-She picks-

Rhoda; hey Dan, have you decided where we are meeting? -She asks-
Daniel; yeah when get to jinja road pick a restaurant and let me know where you are.
Rhoda; ok then. See you in 30minutes.

Daniel rushed to his friend jimmy
Jimmy; Daniel man what’s up?
-He asks-
I didn’t expect you
-He continued-
Daniel; yeah! Man I know! But I have an emergency
Jimmy; an emergency? What emergency?
Did some one die?
Daniel; no no! It’s just that man, as you know,
Some bitch called me and she is like she wants to see me.
So I need you to bail me out with a few bucks.
-He has received a message-.
-He reads it- “find me at mat’s”
Daniel; Let me send her a message
-He tells jimmy-
Daniel types a message- “ ok I will be there in a flash of light”.
Jimmy; ey! Man take this, it’s not much
Daniel; its ok! This will do for me
Jimmy; you know its not good to keep a woman waiting.
Daniel; thanks man.

Daniel runs to get a boda.
He negotiates with the first rider he saw.
Daniel; hey boss gyebale,
The rider; kale
Daniel; njagala kuntwalako ku mat’s.
The rider; eh
Daniel; sente meka
The rider; lukumi mu bitaano
Daniel; ah! Ezo nyinji, nkuwa lukumi
-As is sitting on the bike-
-They rode the bike off
-He got to mat’s-
He saw where she was sited and walked there.

Rhoda; you are here in just a flash of light you told me.
Daniel; sorry if I kept you waiting long.
Rhoda; You are not that late
Daniel; its just that some times it threatens to rain so light waits for a little longer for a spark.
-Rhoda jiggles
Daniel; so how are you?
-He asks as he is taking a sit-
Rhoda; fine how are you
Daniel; not that bad. And how is school
Rhoda; its ok, just that a lot of books that have to be read.
Daniel; I can imagine how challenging it is.
Rhoda; yeah I bet you do
Daniel; hahahahah
-He laughs-
Why do you say that?
-He asks
Rhoda; I know you are good at finding out about what you don’t do.
That’s why. She added
Daniel; is that supposed to be a complement?
Ok let forget that that you said it.
Rhoda; ohh by the way Daniel I have to go shortly
Daniel; go? What do you mean you have to go?
Why that first?
Rhoda; actually my friends are waiting for me so we can have dinner together at wands
Then from there we will go steak and have some fun.
Daniel; no you can’t tell me you mean that.
Besides it’s still very early. If you leave now you will get to steak
Like you ‘ve gone for a 7 o’clock mass.
Hold on! He added
-Daniel stood and called a waiter-
The waiter comes

The waiter; good evening lady
What can I get for you?
-The waiter asks Rhoda-
Rhoda; aam, just fries and a coke
The waiter; and you sir, what can I get you?
Daniel; a coke will do for me, but very cold
Rhoda; Daniel, aren’t you going to eat any thing?
Daniel; I usually eat once a day and take tea.
If I eat too much I get stomach disorders.
Rhoda; oh am so sorry about that.
-The waiter steps in-
The waiter; here you are
This for the lady
And this for the gent
Rhoda; thanks
-She says to the waiter-
-Then the waiter walks away-
Rhoda; so Daniel, what are you doing these days?
-Her phone rings-
Rhoda; excuse me please
-She answers the call……….-
-It was her friend’s calling-
Daniel; so what does that mean?
Are you telling me you are leaving me here?
Let me hope you are not.
Rhoda; no am not. Only that I was going to tell that am about to go.
-Daniel was disturbed-
-It appeared to him like he was just pushing or force her to keep around-
-Which he didn’t like-
He called the waiter paid him
As he waited for his balance
There was silence.

Rhoda; Daniel, what’s wrong?
Daniel; why?
Rhoda; you are not talking
Daniel; neither you are.
-The waiter step in again-
The waiter; boss here is your balance
Daniel stood up
Got the balance in his pocket
Rhoda; Dan, what’s wrong?
-She asks again-
Daniel; your friends are waiting.
Rhoda; no Daniel please I didn’t mean it like that
Daniel; no we cannot enjoy a conversation with your mind elsewhere.
If we wait any longer you could leave me here just like that
Like am stranded.
Rhoda; course not, I can’t do that.
Daniel; am going to kamoo so we can board same taxi, you will jump off at wands and I will continue home.
Rhoda; Dan you are mad at me, aren’t you?
Daniel; no why should I be mad at you
Rhoda; then why is that look on your face?
And acting that way
Daniel; who? Me, me acting? How?
Rhoda; like I have said or done some thing that has upset you.
Daniel; to be honest! I am
Rhoda; why?
Daniel: I had a lot on my mind to say to you only that
I thought I was going to use this chance, but you denied me the space to say any thing from deep inside me.
And do you know how that makes me feel?
Sad. That’s how it makes me feel
Every thing was fake like it was manufactured
Nothing fun or natural was flowing around like it should have.
Do you know why?
Daniel changes the tone of his voice slightly but remains calm and gentle
What were on you mind were your friends, like I was wasting your time.
-That’s why he added-
Rhoda; Daniel, am really sorry for making you feel so bad like that.
Please forgive me
Daniel; there a taxi is, its going to leave you.
Rhoda; aren’t you going with me?
Daniel; no I will take the other one.
-Rhoda gets on the taxi but very sad for making Daniel feel bad about her-
-Thinking of how she will apologize to Daniel-
Daniel instead goes to a bar and finds a friend to change the way his day ended.
